Larger Than Life Music from the Heart of Australia.
About Speewah:
Taking their name from a legendary sheep station in Australian history where everything was said to be larger than life, Speewah has been known to swing from rowdy sheep songs and Irish bush dance tunes to a captivating mix of folk, jazz, blues, and world music. Their energetic performances keep the night moving with toe-tapping rhythms and enthusiastic audience participation.
Formed long ago (longer than anyone can remember!), Speewah boasts a performance history as long as the Gun Barrel Highway, having entertained at concerts, bush dances, functions, celebrations, schools, and pubs across the land. They’ve even performed in some truly unique venues – ferries, trains, ocean liners, trucks, camels (or at least where camels were!), catamarans, campfires, and of course, stages. Drawing on the rich folk and Celtic traditions of our pioneering ancestors, Speewah delivers a truly authentic and unforgettable musical experience.
Crooked Mick Stories:
The Legend of the Murray River:
One of Crooked Mick’s most famous stories tells of how he formed the mighty Murray River. Legend has it that while running across the vast Speewah station (bigger than Texas, some say!), Mick had to leap over a fence. In his haste, the fence wire caught his leg, and with the force of his momentum, he pulled out fence posts for a staggering five miles! These posts, miraculously, joined together and plunged into the ground, creating the very bed of the Murray River.
